On March 22, 2026, at approximately 8:47 A.M., police officers responded to a report of a burglary at a residence in Apple Valley, Dakota County, Minnesota. The reporting party (hereinafter “Victim”) stated that her PlayStation 5 had been stolen from her home. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was driving her car when she noticed an issue with her tires. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was then unable to re-start her car. Victim [NAME REDACTED] had been tampered with during the burglary. A tow truck driver observed a puddle of green liquid under the car and noticed the radiator cap was loose.
On March 25, 2026, at approximately 1:11 A.M., police officers were dispatched to an open 911 line at Victim’s residence. Prior to the hang up, the dispatcher heard a female say, “I can’t have you coming here in the middle of the night. I changed the [garage] code. I don’t know how you got in here.” A male responded, “give us a chance” and explained that he had bypassed her garage door code. The male went on to discuss wanting a relationship with Victim. Upon arrival, police officers observed that the front door was ajar.
Police officers entered the residence and located Victim. Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Victim [NAME REDACTED] said that she was “freaked out.” Victim [NAME REDACTED] had been sleeping when she awoke to JOHN RUSSEL KAVITZ [DOB REDACTED] standing above her. Victim [NAME REDACTED] said he had “hacked” the garage door code. Victim then called 911 and left the line open so that the incident would be recorded until police officers arrived. Police officers quickly located KAVITZ in Victim’s bedroom. KAVITZ was arrested and placed in handcuffs.
Police officers located KAVITZ’s vehicle nearby. A police officer seized KAVITZ’s cell phone to prevent the deletion of evidence. The vehicle was seized pursuant to a search warrant. During the subsequent search of the vehicle, police officers located Victim’s PlayStation 5, a pellet gun, and apparent burglary tools. In a follow-up statement, Victim explained that she and KAVITZ dated from August to September 2025. Victim had not contacted KAVITZ since they broke up as she had blocked him. Victim explained that KAVITZ admitted to taking the PlayStation.
Victim also explained that KAVITZ admitted to manipulating her vehicle’s radiator cap and deflating a tire. KAVITZ kept coming back to Victim’s residence because he 2 19HA-CR-26-437 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 3/27/2026 wanted to get back together with her. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was stalking her.
