On January 16, 2026, at approximately 12:41 P.M., Brainerd Sergeant Dooley was requested to the front counter of the police department to meet with JLD (fully identified in the police reports). Dooley was in the building and met with JLD a short time later. Dooley activated his body worn camera and went out into the lobby. JLD was sitting with a friendand she was holding what appeared to be a wet rag or ice pack against her face. She had visible fresh injuries on her face, and the rag appeared to have wet red stains consistent with bleeding.
JLD told Dooley that she was just assaulted by her boyfriend, Garret William Doppler [DOB REDACTED], about "20 minutes ago." Dooley asked if she needed an ambulance and she said no. Dooley then took her alone into the secure waiting area to get a statement about what happened. Dooley activated a digital recorder and learned the following information. JLD and Doppler have been in a romantic, intimate relationship for about seven months. During that time, they lived together at her residence in Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota.
JLD and Doppler stayed last night into this morning at the Mille Lacs hotel (later determined to be the Grand Casino hotel). Around 8:30 A.M. This morning, JLD was going through Doppler's bags looking for clothes to wear and to bring for laundry. She found some drugs and paraphernalia in the bag and was upset because she knew immediately what it was due to her past drug use. She also stated that she has suspected Doppler of using meth due to his weight loss and how he's been acting. She stated she has questioned Doppler about drug use and he continued to deny it.
JLD said she felt betrayed because she was lied to about Doppler's apparent drug use. She said they argued about this as they were checking out and driving back to Brainerd. JLD said the physical assault did not occur until they got into Brainerd, in the area of the Goodwill Store on 5th Avenue, Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota. JLD was driving and Doppler was in the front passenger seat. They went to the Goodwill because she needed a new pair of sunglasses. JLD pointed to a healed cut on the upper bridge of her nose and said that came from yesterday (01/15/26) when Doppler punched her in the face while she was wearing sunglasses.
The hit was hard enough that it broke her sunglasses. JLD went to Goodwill because she did not want to buy another pair of expensive glasses in case Doppler broke them again. JLD told Doppler that she was going to drop him off somewhere and that "we're done" regarding their relationship. Doppler started swinging at her with a closed right fist, repeatedly striking JLD in the face. She stated he hit her about 5-6 times. She had fresh visible injuries and said the bleeding on the right side of the chin was from Doppler punching her.
