On January 26, 2026, at approximately 8:00 PM, officers from Apple Valley Police Department were dispatched to Target, in Apple Valley, Dakota County, Minnesota. Upon arrival they met with Target Loss Prevention staff, herein LP. LP informed them that they had a potential suspect, later identified as Abdirahman Yusuf Hassan (DOB: 01/ 01/ 2000), Defendant herein, in the store and they observed him concealing items. Officers observed Defendant picked up multiple items and placed them into a suitcase.
Defendant walked towards the exit where officers were waiting for him. Defendant exited the store, crossing all final points of sale without attempting to pay for or abandon the merchandise. Defendant observed the officers outside and attempted to turn around to go back into the store where he was then approached by LP. He was taken into custody. Once in custody, defendant informed the officers that he had ingested drugs and feared dying. Officers took defendant to the hospital. While at the hospital, he was able to ingest more substances that he had hidden in an orifice.
Once he was medically cleared, he was transported to the Dakota County Jail. The total amount of merchandise taken by Defendant on January 26, 2026, was $649.92. During the investigation, LP informed officers that Defendant had a prior theft at this same Target on January 18, 2026. They provided video evidence that showed defendant entering the store at 6:42 PM. He selected an All in Motion branded Duffle bag. Next, he walked through the store and placed multiple items into that bag. He bypassed all points of sale and exited the building without paying.
The total amount of merchandise taken by Defendant on January 18, 2026, was $408.45. Once aggregated, the total amount of theft by defendant from January 18, 2026, to January 26, 2026, is $1,058.37. Defendant was convicted of misdemeanor theft, pursuant to 609.52, Subd. 2(a)(1) in court file 02- CR-25-3486 on November 11, 2025.
