On September 11, 2025, officers with the Burnsville Police Department responded to a call regarding a vehicle that had been reported as stolen while parked outside of a business on County Road 42 West in the City of Burnsville, County of Dakota, Minnesota. Officers spoke with the vehicle’s owner, who confirmed that no one else had permission to take or use the vehicle. On September 18, 2025, Burnsville officers were dispatched to a hotel on West Frontage Road in the City of Burnsville, County of Dakota, Minnesota, because the stolen vehicle had been located parked in the parking lot of the hotel.
Officers spoke with hotel staff who were able to identify Steve Scott Morris, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter Defendant, as the individual to whom the stolen vehicle was registered with the hotel. Staff also provided security footage from the hotel parking lot showing a man matching Defendant’s likeness, driving the stolen vehicle into the hotel parking lot and then walking inside the hotel. Security footage from inside the lobby showed the same man walking inside the lobby, where his face was easily identifiable.
Officers made contact with Defendant at his hotel room and asked him about the stolen vehicle. Defendant claimed he had only walked up to the stolen vehicle at one point by mistake. When shown an image from the security footage showing the man exiting the stolen vehicle after driving it into the hotel parking lot, Defendant responded, “that’s me.
