At approximately 12:09 am on January 7, 2026, officers from the Inver Grove Heights Police Department responded to a residence located in the City of Inver Grove Heights, within Dakota County, on a report of threats of violence. Initial reports were that a man told a woman that he was on his way to her house and was going to kill her. Upon arrival, an officer spoke with Victim A (an adult female fully identified in the reports). She said her ex-boyfriend, Robert Jacob Schmitz [DOB REDACTED], the defendant herein, sent her text messages threatening to kill her and burn her parent’s house down.
She said she believed the defendant would kill her and she was afraid. The officer called the defendant. He confirmed he was in a car but disconnected the call before telling the officer where he was going. The defendant then called Dakota County dispatch. He confirmed he was in an Uber and was on his way to Victim A’s residence. The defendant was arrested when he arrived in the area of Victim A’s residence. During a post- Miranda statement, the defendant said he “probably” made threats to the victim [NAME REDACTED] at her home.
