The verdict followed a two-and-a-half-week trial stemming from the deaths of the children on March 15, 2024, at a home on Red Lake Nation.

Officers arrived at the home and found people inside performing life-saving efforts on the man who had been shot. Officers took over care and called for Red Lake EMS, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities launched a coordinated search through a nearby wooded area and a shelter-in-place order was issued for residents in the immediate area while the operation was underway.

Beltrami County authorities identified the victims as Red Lake Department of Public Safety Officer Jesse Branch and Alan Lussier Jr., a member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.

A Red Lake woman has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for felony child neglect following the death of a child under her care, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota.
