On May 24, 2026, at about 10:56 pm, officers of the Rochester Police Department were dispatched to a business in NW Rochester, MN, Olmsted County for a report of a shooting. Witness 1 (adult female identified in police reports) had taken a photo of the scene and showed it to an employee inside of the business. A description of the shooter was given, which was that they were a black male with shoulder length dreads, wearing a blue sweatshirt. Still images from the business surveillance were obtained of the suspected shooter and sent to law enforcement.
It was learned that people associated with the shooting had left and went downtown. Officers went downtown to talk to potential witnesses. Witness 2 (adult female identified in police reports) was found downtown and was wearing the same thing she was during the shooting. Witness 2 stated that she did not know the shooters name because she had just met them. She knew that they went by "Luke." Witness 2 provided Officer Dunford with his social media information and showed her his profile. Officer Dunford noted that the account user posted three glock cases earlier in the day.
There was also a video of the male wearing a blue hoodie. Victim 1 (adult female identified in police reports) and Victim 2 (adult female identified in police reports) were taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle where they met law enforcement. Victim 1 had suspect bullet graze marks on her ankle and upper leg. Victim 2 had a gunshot would to be abdomen and arm. Victim 1 described the shooter as a black male, approximately 6' 6'', 120-130 pounds, thin dreads, wearing a blue Champion hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and shoes.
Det. Powell went to the hospital to speak with Victims 1 and 2. Victim 2 was unavailable to speak due to her injuries. Victim 1 reported that she went to the NW business with her cousins. Victim 1 came to pick them up. Victim 1 was driving their mother's vehicle. Victim 1 got out of the car and was talking to a guy wearing a blue sweatshirt. Victim 2 saw this and went outside. They got into a confrontation with the male and began fighting. The male hit both Victim 1 and Victim 2 with his fists, they hit him back with their fists.
The male then took out a firearm and began shooting in a sweeping motion. Victim 2 was hit twice with bullets. Victim 1 and 2 fell to the ground and eventually got into their vehicle. On the way to the hospital they were pulled over. Victim 1 was able to show Det. Powell a Facebook profile for Luke Giwa. Officers sent out still photos of the surveillance and Det. Bottcher identified the shooter as LUKE BENSON GIWA [DOB REDACTED]. It was noted that the social media accounts that Witness 2 provided law enforcement belonged to Giwa.
In the early morning hours of May 25, officers conducted surveillance on Giwa's residence in Rochester, MN. At about 2:20 am three males were observed entering the residence. About a 3 ••-CR-••-•••• Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 5/27/2026 minute later, a yellow Camaro that was parked near the Giwa residence turned its headlights on. It was noted that a vehicle associated with Giwa was still at the residence. The Camaro left the residence. The vehicle did not have valid registration, Officer Ulrich activated his emergency lights and sirens and the vehicle shut all of it's lights off but continued moving.
