At around 7:04 AM on January 10, 2026, officers were sent to the apartment building at 2060 9th Avenue East, North St. Paul, Ramsey County on a shooting. Officers entered an apartment and saw blood spatter on the carpet and wall leading to the bedrooms. Officers found NID ([DOB redacted]) with a gunshot wound to his face and a spent casing was next to NID’s body. NID was not breathing and had no pulse. Officers performed CPR until medics arrived and placed NID on a LUCAS machine. After a short time on the machine medics pronounced NID dead.
Officers spoke to one of the residents who said she heard a knock on her bedroom window around 6:45 AM. She got up and let her daughter’s friend, Zay, and two of his friends into the apartment. She claimed not to know Zay’s full name. She went back to her bedroom where she heard a fight and a pop. She stepped out of her bedroom and saw blood on the walls. She followed the trail to the victim who was one of Zay’s friends she had let inside. The resident provided police with Zay’s Facebook profile.
Officer executed a search warrant and found paperwork in the bedroom addressed to ZAY’VION DONTAVIOUS EDGERSON ([DOB redacted]). Surveillance video showed Edgerson, XW, and NID arrived at the apartment building at 2060 9th Avenue East at 6:32 AM. Edgerson wore a letterman jacket. They were unable to get inside. XW went to another entrance and forced the door open. At 6:44 AM. The trio entered and exited the apartment building a few different times. At around 7:00 AM, XW ran up the stairs and exited without his jacket.
A minute later, Edgerson appeared at a door, looked outside, and walked away. At around 7:08 AM, XW returned. XW was let inside and he ran downstairs, grabbed his jacket, and left with it. XW agreed to meet with police to provide a statement. XW said he met up with NID and Edgerson. XW was good friends with NID and Edgerson was someone they had only recently started hanging out with. Edgerson drove the trio to 2060 9th Avenue in a black Tahoe. Edgerson was renting a bedroom from a woman at that building.
When in the bedroom Edgerson and NID got into an argument over a sweatshirt. Edgerson hit NID, and when NID tried to hit Edgerson back, Edgerson pulled out a tan handgun from his groin area and shot NID. XW fled the building in fear of Edgerson. XW realized he left his phone behind, and he returned to retrieve it when he saw that Tahoe was gone. XW left again and called his mom. XW picked Edgerson out of a photo line-up as the man who shot NID. Officers located a vehicle near where Edgerson lived with his mother.
The vehicle was registered in a neighbor’s name. The neighbor told police they had sold the vehicle to Edgerson’s mother. Edgerson’s mother denied the sale. Officers executed a search warrant on the vehicle. Officers found a P80 handgun with an extended magazine wrapped in a black shirt. Officers found another handgun with a tan slide and a letterman jacket consistent with what Edgerson wore at the time of the shooting. Edgerson was arrested at a neighbor’s residence. Officers recovered a firearm in the room where Edgerson had slept.
