On February 25, 2026, around 2:08 P.M., law enforcement responded to the U-Haul located at [ADDRESS REDACTED] NW, Coon Rapids, Anoka County, on a report of a stolen U-Haul rental. The reporting party, U-Haul manager, M. G., told law enforcement that they rented a white 2016 Ford F650 (AZ/AG97517) on January 22, 2026, to a “Mathew Greg Strangland” [DOB REDACTED] for a one-day rental due by noon on January 23, 2026. One payment was made on January 22, 2026, on a prepaid gift card but no other payments were made thereafter for the rental, and it has not been returned.
The U-Haul was entered stolen. M. G. Also told law enforcement he suspected the driver’s license provided at the time of the rental was fake; it was a paper temporary driver’s license. The email provided at the time was also noooboddyy@gmail.com. Law enforcement confirmed the photocopy of the paper driver’s license used did not match the photo of the real Strangland and Strangland’s actual birthday was a different year in DVS records. The phone number provided for the rental was traced to Jesse James Berwald [DOB REDACTED], defendant herein.
The photo on the alleged fake driver’s license matched the DVS photo for defendant. Surveillance footage of the rental also confirm the renter was defendant as defendant and the suspect in the footage have a distinct neck tattoo. The value of the U-Haul truck is around $50,000 and it was recovered in Champlin, Hennepin County, on or about March 4, 2026.
