On April 16, 2026, officers were dispatched to an apartment located in Brooklyn Park, Hennepin County, Minnesota, based on a domestic assault. Officers arrived and located the reporting party, an adult female identified herein as “Victim.” Victim reported that she was at the apartment building to visit the father of her children, ALMONTZE TERRELL JAMES ([DOB redacted]), who had invited her over for a drink tonight. Victim brought their one-year-old child over as well. Victim stated that she and JAMES had broken up a month ago, but she went over that night to see if they could work things out.
She had only been at JAMES’s apartment for about 20 minutes before they started to argue. Victim stated that JAMES had been drinkng. Victim tried to walk out of the room when JAMES grabbed her by the throat and choked her. Victim was unable to breathe. Victim got away from JAMES and grabbed a knife out of her purse to defend herself. JAMES wanted her to leave the apartment, which Victim also wanted to do. Victim put her knife away and went to the front door to leave, but JAMES grabbed her from behind and punched her on the side of her head.
Victim fell to the ground and tried to protect herself as JAMES punched her in the head multiple times. Victim was then able to get up and leave the apartment, which is when she called 911. Officers observed marks on the side of Victim’s neck, including scratches with a small amount of blood. Officers went to JAMES’s apartment, and his brother answered the door. Initially, JAMES’s brother stated he was asleep and was woken up by the knocking and that he was the only person present in the apartment.
Officers saw another individual, however, and eventually JAMES came to the door to speak with officers. He told officers that Victim had come over that night for drinks. He denied hitting or getting physical with Victim, but admitted that at one point she had pointed a knife at him because she was upset. JAMES was arrested and remains in custody.
