On January 9, 2026, Champlin Police Officers were dispatched to a known residence located in Champlin, Hennepin County, Minnesota, on a child [NAME REDACTED]. Upon arrival, officers located Victim, an 18-month- old child, on the floor of the living room. Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Officers attempted to provide life-saving intervention., but were unsuccessful. Victim was declared dead after being transported to the hospital. Officers learned that Victim’s mother, MAIGE ELIZABETH YANG, the defendant herein, was also in distress.
The defendant was found partially unconscious in the upstairs bedroom, after attempting suicide. The defendant was transported to the hospital and remains under supervision by the police. Officers spoke to the defendant’s parents who provided information about the day. Officers learned that the defendant had a court hearing regarding the custody of Victim. Temporary custody was given to Victim’s father at that hearing. Upon returning home, Victim [NAME REDACTED] went to the bedroom upstairs. The defendant’s father reported that he went to check on them later and found the door locked.
He stated that he forced the door open and found Victim on the floor with her lips turning blue. The defendant’s father stated that he grabbed Victim, [NAME REDACTED] called 911. In a post-Miranda statement, the defendant stated that after the court hearing, she returned home and went to the bedroom. The defendant admitted that she put children’s sleeping medication into Victim’s bottle in order to make the pain go away. According to the defendant, she poured a significant amount of the medication into the bottle and then fed the bottle to Victim.
The defendant confessed that she intended for the medication to be lethal, hoping it would make Victim [NAME REDACTED] in her sleep. The defendant is not currently in custody. Given the charge and the suicide attempt, the State requests a warrant.
