On December 25, 2024, Discord, Inc. Generated a CyberTip regarding an image of child sexual abuse material that had been uploaded to their platform from an IP address that was later determined to be at [address omitted], Roseville, Ramsey County. The image showed an 8-12-year-old girl lying on her back looking at the camera with her vagina and anus exposed. The email associated with the Discord account that uploaded image was [email redacted]. The phone associated with the Discord activity was an iPhone 14. Further investigation revealed that the Discord account and phone number associated with the account correspond to JENS GROTHEER ([DOB redacted]). Investigators obtained direct message chats from Grotheer’s Discord account.
All the conversations were tied to an iPhone 14. On November 14, 2025, officers executed a warrant and arrested Grotheer in his vehicle in the parking lot of [address omitted], Roseville, Ramsey County. Grotheer had an Apple iPhone 14 Plus when he was arrested. Grotheer was advised of his constitutional rights and agreed to speak to investigators. Grotheer admitted the Discord account belonged to him. Grotheer claimed he met users in chatrooms, learned they were adults, then engaged in age-based role play in direct messages.
Grotheer said his Discord activity was just fantasy – he does cocaine, gets high, horny and deviant, and goes to a chatroom to talk to “anyone.” When asked about the image of child pornography sent from his Discord account on Christmas 2024, Grotheer said it was the flavor of the night and “it was just whoever [he] was talking to.” Grotheer said someone sent him the image. Grotheer said at one time he would have saved the image to his phone but not anymore. Grotheer denied there was child pornography on his phone.
When asked why he did not decline when a 13-year-old offered him nude photos, Grotheer said, “I should have.” Grotheer then blamed the girl saying he knew how the law worked and that it was illegal for her to also have the photos. When told the girl was the victim and he was the adult soliciting them, Grotheer admitted, “I f***** up, and I was talking to people online when I shouldn’t have.” Grotheer agreed when told his behavior extended over the course of years. Grotheer denied being sexually attracted to children, buy he said he’s “attracted to anything” when he is on drugs.
Grotheer claimed he would not engage in sexual activity with a child even if he was high – he could control himself. Grotheer claimed he would never do it in real life, and he then asked for a lawyer. Officers obtained and executed a search warrant on Grotheer’s Apple iPhone 14. Chatroom communications involving Grotheer were recovered, but the messages did not verify Grotheer’s claims that he verified he was communicating with adults. Officers found over 100,000 images and videos saved on Grotheer’s phone.
