On May 1, 2026, Minneapolis police were dispatched to a domestic assault on the 2600 block of Pleasant Avenue South within the city of Minneapolis, Hennepin County. Initial information from dispatch indicated a reporting party called hearing a male assaulting a female and the male had broken down the female's door. Reporting party could hear the female yelling, "he's hitting me" and that male is choking the female who could not breathe. The call taker could hear screaming in the background of the call.
Reporting party also heard the female screaming, "Help." Officers responded to the location and could hear a female yelling. A male exited [APT REDACTED], believed to be the suspect male and confirmed he was, identifying him as MANN, KALEFFA STEVEN [DOB REDACTED], herein after "Defendant". Officers observed the adult female Victim [NAME REDACTED] in only a bra and underwear and had a trembling voice when she spoke. Officers observed the odor of pepper spray in the apartment. Victim described to the officers there was an argument and Defendant left and returned to the apartment.
Defendant wanted his belongings and broke in the door. Then Defendant put his hands on Victim, [NAME REDACTED], punched her, slapped her, and picked her up and slammed her to the ground. She also stated Defendant wrapped his bicep and arm around her neck and began squeezing her throat, strangling her. Victim [NAME REDACTED] could not breathe and he continued to apply pressure. Victim described difficulty breathing and may have seen spots. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was then raspier than prior to the assault and her neck had pain.
Defendant eventually let go of Victim [NAME REDACTED] was able to get pepper spray and sprayed it at the Defendant. Victim [NAME REDACTED] in relationship and had been living together for a year. Officers observed a red mark on the back of Victim's neck. Defendant is currently in custody pending charges from this incident. Defendant has the following prior Qualified Domestic Assault Related Convictions: Domestic assault by strangulation in Benton County Court file 05-CR-21-460with disposition on 7/22/2022; and 3rd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct in Stearns County Court file ••-CR-••-•••• with disposition on 5/2/2022.
