On the morning of 9/27/2025, MPD officers responded to a hit and run incident with injuries in the area of Lake St E and 10th Ave S in Minneapolis, Hennepin County. Upon arrival, officers observed Victim SD being treated by paramedics and a bent bicycle nearby. Witnesses told officers there had been a white sedan at a red light, facing north on 10th Ave S at Lake St E. Witnesses said that Victim SD went around the back of the vehicle, and the vehicle put the car in reverse and backed over him. Witnesses stated that the driver of the vehicle continued in reverse and dragged Victim [NAME REDACTED] was under the car yelling and hitting the bumper of the car with his hands.
Officers spoke with Victim SD, who believed the vehicle reversed three separate times while he was being dragged. Officers observed Victim SD had visible abrasions all over his body consistent with being dragged across pavement. Victim SD was transported to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. Witnesses took a photo of the vehicle, which appeared to be a white Hyundai sedan. The plate was difficult to make out in the photos. Investigators later obtained surveillance from US Bank that showed a 2011 Hyundai Sonata bearing MN# JUF786 go through the drive-through, which is equipped with cameras.
In that footage, a Hispanic male was driving the vehicle and wearing a black hat and a gray Reebok t-shirt. The male also appeared to have a groomed goatee and multiple tattoos on his right arm and hand and a tattoo on his left hand. The male appeared to be in his mid to late 20's with a stocky to muscular build. The suspect was sitting down, but his height was estimated to be between 5'5" and 5'8". After leaving the drive through, the suspect continued onto 10th Ave S and stopped at the semaphore for Lake St E. Shortly after, Victim SD stopped behind the vehicle.
The suspect pulled the Hyundai forward into the crosswalk, at which time Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Shortly after, for unknown reasons, the suspect put the vehicle in reverse, striking Victim SD, who fell to the ground. The vehicle continued reversing with Victim SD under the rear bumper/trunk. The vehicle appeared to run Victim [NAME REDACTED], but the bicycle stopped the vehicle from doing so. With Victim SD under the rear of the vehicle, the suspect stopped briefly but then continued to reverse, as Victim SD could be seen slapping the rear driver's side bumper with his head right next to the driver's side rear tire.
With Victim SD still under the vehicle, a witness, who was also in the drive-through, exited the vehicle they were in and ran over to the suspect vehicle. The suspect and witness spoke briefly before the suspect left the scene driving east on Lake St E. Multiple vehicles were seen stopping to assist Victim SD. The investigator requested assistance of Hennepin County CISA to identify the driver of the vehicle, as he did not match the registered owner. CISA learned the driver had been identified as Anthony Joel Carranza- Mariduena, [DOB REDACTED] (now referred to as "DEFENDANT"). DEFENDANT had been stopped by Maple Grove PD on 10/11/2025 for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and was cited for No MN DL, failure to yield, and failure to maintain a lane of traffic.
