The Minnetonka Police Department investigated a report related to fraud occurring at TJX properties (Marshall's, Home Goods, Sierra, T. J Maxx, etc.) in Hennepin County, Minnesota, concerning two suspects and a common scheme ranging from November 4, 2023 to January 19, 2024. The investigation followed two suspects who would purchase gift card(s) at a store using a stolen credit card. The suspects would then go to a different store and complete a split-purchase where the purchased gift card would be used in addition to Suspect 1's personal credit card.

Suspect 1 would then then go to a store and return merchandise, crediting the returned merchandise value to Suspect 1’s personal credit card, creating a credit to Suspect 1’s credit card. Through investigation, the following was observed: On November 4, 2023, Suspects 1 and 2 purchase two gift cards using Victim 1’s financial cards at Marshalls located at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. In Eagan. The two gift cards were $500 each, for a total of $1000. On December 19, 2023, Suspect 1 purchases two gift cards using Victim 2’s financial transaction card at Marshalls located at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. In Minnetonka.

On January 6, 2024, Suspects 1 and 2 purchase two gift cards using Victim 3’s financial transaction card at Marshalls located at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. In Minnetonka. The two gift cards were $500 each, for a total of $1000. Through investigation, officer(s) learned Victims 1, 2 and 3 did not authorize these transactions. Each of these gift card purchases occurred in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Suspect 1 was responsible for a financial transaction card loss to Victims 1, 2, and 3 in the total amount of approximately $2,000. Investigation further revealed Suspect 1 would purchase items from a TJX property by using one of the obtained gift cards and Suspect 1’s personal credit card.

Suspect 1 would then return the merchandise at a different location, crediting the full value of the returned merchandise onto Suspect 1’s personal credit card. These transactions occurred on the following: On November 5, 2023, Suspect 1 completes two split tendered purchases for $697.68 and $610.51 at HomeGoods located at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. Maple Grove, MN using two of the gift cards and Suspect 1’s personal credit card. Suspect 1 returns one of these purchases on November 5, 2023 at HomeGoods located at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. Eden Prairie, MN using a suspected altered receipt.

The entire value was credited to Suspect 1’s personal credit card. Suspect 1 returns the other of these purchases on November 5, 2023 at HomeGoods located at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. In Roseville, MN with $109.01 credited to Suspect 1’s personal credit card. These store locations are each in Hennepin County, Minnesota. On December 19, 2023, Suspect 1 completes two split tendered purchases for $596.87 and $564.89 at T. J Maxx located at 8322 Highway 7 in St. Louis Park, MN using two of the gift cards and Suspect 1’s personal credit card.
