On or about February 13, 2026, Officer Demko of the Cloquet Police Department was on duty in the City of Cloquet, Carlton County, Minnesota. At approximately 7:22pm, Officer Demko was dispatched to assist Minnesota State Patrol in finding a vehicle believed to have been involved in a hit and run incident. Officer Demko received information related to the vehicle, including the body style, color and the license plate number, MN PNZ947. A short time later, Officer Demko observed a vehicle matching the description and license plate exit Interstate 35 onto Highway 33 in the City of Cloquet.
Officer Demko initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified the driver and sole occupant as Crystina Rose Vanguilder [DOB REDACTED], hereafter Defendant. On approach, Defendant lit a fresh cigarette and kept it between herself and Officer Demko. In his training and experience, Officer Demko knows that this is a common tactic to mask the odor of alcohol. Officer Demko also observed a small empty bottle of Fireball, an alcoholic beverage. Officer Demko asked Defendant to extinguish her cigarette, which she did.
At that point, Officer Demko observed the odor of alcoholic beverages coming from Defendant. Defendant was asked to perform standard field sobriety tests and provide a preliminary breath test (PBT) sample. Defendant’s PBT sample was.119. Defendant was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. A search of the passenger compartment was performed for evidence related to driving while intoxicated, and Officer Demko located a small clear baggie with a white powdery substance in the center console.
Also located was the empty Fireball bottle. Defendant was brought to the Carlton County Jail and read the breath test advisory. A successful Datamaster‐G test yielded a BAC of.10 at 8:58pm. A field test of the white powdery indicated a positive result for the presence of cocaine, a schedule II substance. Defendant’s driver’s license was revoked on November 9, 2025 following a prior impaired driving offense in 69DU‐CR‐25‐3571.
