On September 22, 2025, at approximately 11:38 P.M., S. M. T. Contacted dispatch to report that her son, Cameron Vaughan Smith, was injured at 415 SE 21st Street, [APT REDACTED], Grand Rapids, Itasca County. The Grand Rapids Police Department is thoroughly familiar with the family that resides at the address. Upon arrival at the scene, Sergeant Michelle Kortekaas observed Jeremia Allen Matheson (suspect in the assault on Smith) sitting in the middle of the driveway/roadway. Said Sergeant also observed S. M. T. Walking with her daughter and Cameron Smith (suspect in the assault on Matheson). Through witness interviews, Sergeant Kortekaas learned that Smith and Matheson had earlier been involved in a verbal altercation, which had turned physical.
During his statement, Matheson indicated that Smith was being disrespectful. He stated that Smith punched him first, after which he punched Smith and threw him to the ground. Matheson stated that when he attempted to go back into the apartment building, Smith threw a flower pot that struck him on the arm, causing pain and physical deformity. S. M. T. Stated that she was trying to hold Smith back and was telling Matheson to go back inside. She stated that she saw both Smith and Matheson hit one another.
She stated that she saw Smith throw the pot and strike Matheson with it. She further stated that she saw Matheson throw Smith to the ground. She stated that each was saying things to the other and both bore some degree of fault. When Smith was later interviewed at the hospital, he stated that Matheson had been saying things to him about his mother which made him very upset. He stated that Matheson punched him and slammed him onto the ground, face first (likely causing the nasal fracture). He stated that both of them wrestled around on the ground.
He admitted to throwing the plaster pot and striking Matheson on the arm. The treating physician at the hospital diagnosed Smith with a nasal fracture and serious nasal bleeding. Matheson's treating physician diagnosed him with a fractured ulna on his left arm with obvious deformity. 2 31-CR-26-132 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 1/14/2026 Both combatants appeared to have suffered substantial bodily harm per Minn. Stat. §609.02 Subd. 7a. A record check revealed that Smith has a juvenile adjudication for Fifth Degree Assault from 10/26/2023 in file 31-JV-23-1268. A record check revealed that Matheson has the following criminal convictions: 02/24/2014 Controlled Substance Crime in the Fifth Degree - Possession, felony, Itasca County 01/25/2016 Second Degree Burglary, felony, Itasca County PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: Pursuant to Minn.
