On January 8, 2026, Carlton County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rennquist responded to a call for service related to a vehicle in a ditch near a roadway in Carlton County. Upon arriving on the scene, Deputy Rennquist noticed that the vehicle had Florida plates. Deputy Rennquist also noticed that the driver was slumped over and had a bottle of alcohol on the passenger’s seat. Deputy Rennquist also noticed the odor of alcohol emitting from the vehicle. Deputy Rennquist then woke the driver up who was later identified as Jorge Antonio Gomez [DOB REDACTED] hereinafter Defendant.
While interacting with Defendant, Deputy Rennquist noticed that he had slurred speech. Defendant then informed Deputy Rennquist that he passed out and that he had been drinking. Defendant also stated his last drink was one hour before Deputy Rennquist arrived on scene. Deputy Rennquist then attempted to administer field sobriety test but was unable to due to Defendant’s level of intoxication and inability to cooperate. Defendant was then taken into custody for suspicion of DWI and was transported to Community Memorial Hospital.
While at the hospital, S. P. Went into the hospital room Defendant was in to check on him. When S. P. Tried to leave the room, Defendant lunged at her and placed her in a bearhug chokehold that prevented S. P. From leaving the room. Defendant and S. P. Then fell to the ground and S. P. Was eventually able to escape Defendant’s grasp. Deputies and hospital staff then placed Defendant on the hospital bed. During this time, Defendant swung his leg up and struck another emergency hospital staff member with his foot named D. R. Defendant was then placed into restraints to prevent further assaults on hospital emergency room staff.
Defendant was then presented with a signed search warrant for a blood or urine sample. A blood sample was collected and sent to the BCA for further analysis. The initial results of the blood draw indicated that Defendant had a BAC of.277.
