On November 1, 2025, at approximately 5:55pm, law enforcement from the Moorhead Police Department responded to reports of an assault with a possible machete in the area of 34th Avenue South in Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota. Upon arrival, law enforcement spoke with R. L. (“Victim”) who reported the altercation began as a road rage incident. Victim reported that Abdirahaman Ahmed Sulub [DOB REDACTED] (“Defendant”), had been flipping him off while driving in front of him on I94 from Fargo to Moorhead.
Victim reported going to the same neighborhood as the Defendant to visit a friend but chose to stop near where the Defendant stopped and confront him. Defendant parked in his driveway and the Victim reportedly parked just south of the Defendant’s home. Victim reported that he got out of his vehicle and asked the Defendant “what’s your problem,” and the Defendant made a comment back to the effect of “you want to die today.” At that point, Victim [NAME REDACTED] into his vehicle when the Defendant grabbed a machete from his vehicle and slashed the machete in a downward motion towards the Victim and cut the Victim’s left hand.
The Victim was able to safely get back into his vehicle when the Defendant then smashed the front passenger window of the Victim’s vehicle. Law enforcement spoke with the Defendant who reported that the Victim was following too close behind him on the interstate and driving irradicably. Defendant reported he grabbed the machete in self-defense when the Victim [NAME REDACTED]. However, the Defendant did not report seeing the Victim with a weapon nor did the Victim enter the Defendant’s property or at any point approach the Defendant’s family.
Law enforcement noted observing blood and bandages on the Victim’s left hand and a large amount of shattered glass consistent with a car window being broken in the driveway. The Victim’s vehicle had a busted front passenger window with glass in the driver’s seat. Law enforcement further spoke with B. L. (“Witness”) who indicated that she had been riding in the front passenger seat of the Defendant’s vehicle when the incident occurred. B. L. Stated that the Victim had been following close behind the Defendant on the interstate and believed the Victim was going to hit their vehicle.
Witness reported that both the Victim and the Defendant got out of their respective vehicles and the Defendant returned to the vehicle, grabbed the machete and was holding in his hand above his shoulder when he approached the victim. Witness did not report observing the Defendant strike the Victim [NAME REDACTED] did report seeing the Defendant strike the passenger side window. Witness stated she did not hear the Victim [NAME REDACTED] at any point during the incident.
