On April 21, 2025, officers of the Columbia Heights Police Department were dispatched to a crash at [ADDRESS REDACTED] NE, Columbia Heights, Anoka County. The reporting party indicated that the driver of the vehicle who had crashed into him was slumped over, not responding and seemed to be impaired. When officers arrived, there was a lone driver slumped in the seat, appearing to be having a drug overdose or medical emergency. Officers were able to break the window and gain access. The driver was identified as NICKOLAS BENJAMIN VLASATY [DOB REDACTED], Defendant hereinafter.
Defendant was sweating profusely and had tinfoil with burnt residue on it next to his leg. Officers also observed a small, clear baggy with a black rock-like substance in the cup holder next to Defendant. Defendant admitted to law enforcement that he had smoked fentanyl before driving. Defendant was shown a photo that was taken by officers of the black rock-like substance and admitted it was fentanyl. Defendant was taken to the hospital where a blood draw was done before being taken into custody.
BCA testing showed the substance positive for 1.133 grams of fentanyl.
