On February 27, 2026, Officer Kelling of the Northfield Police Department was dispatched to Marketplace at 416, Northfield, Rice County, to take a report about a bad check. The owner of the business reported that they received a bad check. The owner reported that on January 24, 2026 SHAWN HERRERA issued a check (# 1030) to Marketplace @ 416 in the amount of $505.62 to purchase merchandise. The check was later returned by the bank. The check was issued from a closed account. The check was issued from the bank account belonging to SHAWN HERRERA of St. Paul, MN. The owner also provided Officer Kelling with the license plate number for HERRERA. The license plate number belonged to a vehicle registered to SHAWN HERRERA. The owner also provided the officer with a surveillance photo of HERRERA holding the check.
Officer Kelling saw that the surveillance photo matched the driver's license photo for SHAWN PATRICK HERRERA, [DOB REDACTED]. On February 4, 2026, the owner sent a Notice and Demand for Payment to HERRERA at the address listed on the check. The Notice and Demand for Payment was sent by certified mail. The mail was later returned as insufficient address. Officer Kelling called HERRERA at the phone number listed on the check. The officer was unable to make contact with HERRERA.
