On 11/30/2025 at about 2247 hours, St. Paul Police responded to a report of a domestic incident at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. N in St. Paul, Ramsey County. The caller said her son had a knife and said he would cut her up if her husband didn't give him their vehicle keys. The caller said the son got the keys and then left in the vehicle. Police interviewed the caller; NMB. She said she was sleeping when she heard her son, identified as David Thomas BERNIER [DOB REDACTED], yelling and attacking her husband; DAB. BERNIER then approached her on the couch, pulled her hair, held the knife to her throat, and threatened to “carve [her] up” if she and DAB did not give him $1000 and the car keys.
BERNIER also threatened to throw NMB off the apartment’s 11th floor balcony. NMB said BERNIER then barricaded the apartment with items and only stopped when DAB gave him the car key. BERNIER left the residence with the knife and drove off in DAB’s 2006 Acura TL (UC: AE0870). NMB also said BERNIER had been using illegal drugs for quite some time. The caller’s husband, DAB, told police the incident occurred at 1430 hours. DAB said BERNIER was in the kitchen, got upset, and started throwing items, including a glass that broke.
BERNIER then hit DAB 4 - 5 times with a closed fist in the chest and pushed him into a couch. BERNIER then grabbed a large, 6” – 8”, filet knife from the kitchen, threatened him with it, and demanded that he give him car keys. DAB said BERNIER also punched him in the face. Police noted that DAB had multiple quarter size red marks and a small fresh skin tear on his forearm and visible marks on his nose. DAB said BERNIER then grabbed NMB by the hair while holding the “huge” “scary” knife and said he was going to start "carving her up" if DAB didn't give him the car key.
DAB gave him the key. DAB said this was the second time BERNIER had gotten physical. The last incident occurred in May, which resulted in DAB being hospitalized for 11 days with a fractured rib. Police also spoke to BERNIER’s brother, TCB, who was not in the apartment during the incident. TCB said BERNIER suffers from personality disorders and had been using methamphetamine for about six months. TCB also said that BERNIER was once arrested for shooting at TCB and was released from prison in 2023. According to Carfax.com, the average value of a 2006 Acura TL is $6,697.
