On March 3, 2026, Officer Haas was dispatched to Rosemary Italian Kitchen, Northfield, Rice County, on a report of an attempted motor vehicle in progress. The reporting party said there was three or four people trying to steal a vehicle in the parking lot. Officer Haas arrived on the scene and did not observe the theft in progress in the parking lot. Officer Hass did not see anything out of the ordinary in the parking lot. The reporting party pointed towards a vehicle (MN license plate no. SHX219) in the parking lot.
The vehicle belongs to the reporting party's family member. The reporting party believed that someone may still be inside the vehicle. Officer Haas saw someone inside the vehicle. The person was later identified as KALVIN ALLAN BURWELL, [DOB REDACTED], the defendant herein. The defendant said the vehicle belonged to him. He denied seeing anything about an attempted theft of a vehicle. The defendant then told the officer that the vehicle is his friend's. He said they were not trying to enter anyone's vehicle.
He said the vehicle was unlocked. The defendant admitted that the backpack in the backseat of the vehicle belongs to him. The officer saw a screwdriver next to the driver's seat. The defendant admitted that the screwdriver belonged to him. The defendant admitted that he tried to use the screwdriver to start the vehicle. The reporting party told the officers that he saw the defendant enter the vehicle. The defendant was placed under arrest. During the search incident to arrest, the officers located two small baggies with methamphetamine residue.
There was a small foil with 0.004 grams of methamphetamine. (Confirmed by a field test). The officer also later located 0.063 grams of methamphetamine in a black case. (Confirmed by a field test). The defendant also had 0.435 grams of what officers believed to be psilocybin mushrooms.
