All of the conduct described herein occurred within the County of St. Louis, State of Minnesota, unless otherwise noted. Officers and investigators with the Duluth Police Department conducted an ongoing investigation into MILES JOSEPH HJELSAND, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter referred to as the Defendant, who is suspected of shoplifting from T. J. Maxx and Best Buy at the Burning Tree Plaza in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. During the months of September and October the Defendant was observed on security cameras several different times taking items such as clothing, and bags from the T. J. Maxx store, and a Boombox from the Best Buy.
The aggregated total from the seven incidents within the two months is $2141.42. On September 9, 2025, at approximately 11:48 A.M., the Defendant is seen entering the T. J. Maxx and proceeds to the men’s department where he selects one pair of gray active pants, one white sweater, one gray sweater, one black sweater, one yellow sweater, three pairs of jeans and another white sweater. The Defendant carried the items in his arms and exited the store at 11:50 A.M., without making any attempt to pay.
The ten items of clothing had a total value of $289.90. On October 6, 2025, at approximately 11:36 A.M., the Defendant entered the T. J. Maxx store and took two men’s coats, one long-sleeved sweater, two pairs of men’s socks, two pairs of blue jeans, two tan men’s hoodies, one gray men’s hoodie, and one red sports hat. The Defendant exited the store, carrying the items in his arms and ignoring all points of sale. The total of the 11 items was $280.92. On October 11, 2025, at approximately 10:54 A.M., the Defendant entered the T. J. Maxx store and selected one men’s black coat, one black and green coat, one gray coat, and one red coat.
The Defendant exited the store carrying all of the items in his arms and ignoring all points of sale. The total for the four clothing items was $239.96. On October 14, 2025, at approximately 7:34 P.M., the Defendant entered the Best Buy store across the parking lot from the T. J. Maxx. The Defendant selected a Boombox 3 portable speaker and exited the store without making an attempt to pay. The total loss for Best Buy was $499.99. On October 15, 2025, the Defendant entered the T. J. Maxx store. The Defendant selected a men’s black coat, two sweatshirts, one pair of socks, two pairs of gray sweatpants, one black hoodie, a dark gray hoodie, one navy blue hoodie, two black Addidas pants, one gray hoodie, one light gray backpack, and two black duffle bags.
The Defendant concealed multiple items in the duffle bags and exited the store without making any attempt to pay. The total of the 16 items was $331.84. On October 18, 2025, the Defendant entered the T. J. Maxx store. The Defendant selected one men’s red puffer coat, one men’s black coat, two sets of men’s socks, one men’s T-shirt, one men’s blue hoodie, and one men’s black hoodie. The Defendant exited the store carrying all of the items in his arms and ignoring all points of sale. The total of the seven clothing items was $186.93. On October 20, 2025, the Defendant entered the T. J. Maxx store.
