This case involves a law enforcement encounter.
On March 18, 2026, at approximately 12:52 AM, Centennial Lakes police responded to the area of the 9300th block of Ryan Place in the City of Circle Pines, Anoka County on report of a shooting. The caller, Child Witness One (CW1) herein, reported that her mother and brother were shot inside their home by a male named “Irving.” Based on prior contacts, and the description provided, officers believed the described male to be Irving Van Marsaw [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased adult female, Adult Victim herein, with apparent gunshot wounds to the chest.
Officers also located a five-year-old child, [NAME REDACTED], who was still breathing with apparent gunshot wounds to the chest and left arm. The Child Victim was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased shortly after arrival at Hennepin County Medical Center. CW1 reported that she went on a short walk outside at 12:44 AM with two of her siblings. They returned home around 12:49 AM and heard several “pops” in quick succession as they were walking up. CW1 said her younger brother ran into the home as Defendant walked out of the front door holding a handgun.
Defendant made eye contact with her brother and paused as her brother ran into the home before Defendant ran to a shed on the property. Within a few seconds, CW1’s brother came running out screaming that their mother and little brother were shot. CW1 grabbed her siblings and ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911. Officers immediately established a perimeter and located Defendant hiding in a wooded area a few blocks west with the use of a K9 unit. Defendant was taken into custody at 1:33 AM. Several hours later, a 9mm handgun was located across the street behind the residence in a wooded area along Defendant’s path of flight.
While in custody, Defendant made several statements referencing the incident insinuating it was committed “in the heat of passion.” CW1 provided an additional statement about what occurred leading up to the incident. She stated Defendant had assaulted her mother in the past and threatened to kill her as recently as March 3, 2026. The prior afternoon, on March 17, 2026, the Adult Victim kicked Defendant out of the house after an argument involving Defendant holding a knife. The last conversation CW1 heard between the two was the Adult Victim saying that Defendant better believe she was going to trial, to which Defendant responded, “Bet,” and hung up.
This conversation occurred at 7:01 PM on March 17, 2026. An autopsy conducted by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office on the Adult Victim determined that her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest fired at contact range. The cause of death on the Child Victim was determined to be a gunshot wound to the back, fired at contact range. Additionally, two spent bullets and an unspent round were located near the bodies.
