On November 24, 2025, at 8:16 P.M., Carver County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call for service at [ADDRESS REDACTED] in the City of Chanhassen, County of Carver. Upon arrival, deputies met with an adult female, R. E. G., who stated she "couldn't take her boyfriend anymore." Deputies determined R. E. G.'s boyfriend was Shaun Daniel Smieja, hereafter the Defendant. Deputies also determined that the Defendant had an active arrest warrant out of Dakota County. R. E. G. Stated that the Defendant had been drinking and was "acting weird." R. E. G. Allowed the Defendant into her home because he was otherwise homeless, adding that that the Defendant also had a brain injury.
R. E. G. Reported that the Defendant had recently been in detox in New Ulm. Today, she said the Defendant was demanding more alcohol. The Defendant became angry when R. E. G. Refused to provide more alcohol and one point, the Defendant grabbed her neck. R. E. G. Was then able to wrestle the Defendant out of the house. R. E. G. Stated that her breath was not impeded and that she did not want to make any accusations against the Defendant, she just wanted him out of the house. In speaking with R. E. G., deputies observed red marks about five inches long across the front of her neck and about one inch above where her neck met her chest.
These marks were prevalent and remained red the entire time the deputies remained on the scene. R. E. G. Stated she did not want the deputies to take photos of the marks but she did say that the Defendant had grabbed her neck and that they had been romantic partners in the past. While speaking with R. E. G., the Defendant returned home and was arrested for probable cause domestic assault. Deputies noticed the Defendant appeared to be highly intoxicated. The Defendant agreed to a PBT which resulted in a.255 BrAC. The Defendant was transported to a detoxification facility.
