On or about May 31, 2026, at approximately 2:23 P.M., officers responded to an apartment unit on the 900 block of 7th Street South in Hopkins, Hennepin County, Minnesota for a call of an unwanted party who would not leave the premises. The caller, D. R., wanted his acquaintance, SHYLA LATAVIA PETERSON (“Defendant” herein) to leave his apartment. D. R. Told officers that Defendant had been at his apartment earlier in the day, and Defendant shattered his glass door, so he wanted her to leave. Officers had responded to this earlier incident, and Defendant left the premises.
D. R. Was calling again to report that Defendant had returned to his apartment, and she was refusing to leave. Officers arrived at the apartment and spoke with D. R., who stated that Defendant did not live there, and he wanted her to leave. D. R. Told officers he wanted Defendant trespassed from the property. Officers informed Defendant that she needed to leave, as she was not a resident and was no longer a wanted guest. After some protest, Defendant eventually left D. R.’s unit. Defendant slowly left the building but stopped right outside to sit under the awning.
Defendant told officers that she was going to wait for an Uber, even though she lived less than a block away. Officers noticed Defendant became increasingly aggressive, and they could smell the odor of consumed alcoholic beverages emanating from her. Officers verbally informed Defendant that she was being trespassed from the property, she was not permitted to return for the next year, and she could be cited if she refused to leave or returned to the property. Officers asked Defendant to leave the property, and she refused.
Officers repeatedly told Defendant that she was trespassed from the property, and she needed to leave or she would be arrested. Defendant refused to leave and said multiple times that she would return to the property, even with the trespass order. Officers told Defendant she was under arrest, and Defendant resisted officers by tensing her arms and body and pulling away from officers as they attempted to handcuff her. Officers brought Defendant to the ground, and Defendant tried to lift her waist and hips off the ground while pulling her arms away from officers.
Defendant scratched the officers’ hands, arms, and wrists as they attempted to handcuff her. Defendant scratched Sergeant N. C. (“Victim” herein) and caused him to bleed. Officers were eventually able to handcuff Defendant. They began walking Defendant towards a squad car, and Defendant kicked Victim [NAME REDACTED], causing redness and swelling. Officers placed Defendant in the back of a squad car and transported her to the Hennepin County jail. Defendant remains in custody.
