Your complainant is a captain with the Plymouth Police Department. Your complainant states that on September 29, 2025, at approximately 3:53 P.M., he was clearing a traffic stop near Schmidt Lake Road and Zachary Lane in the City of Plymouth, Hennepin County, Minnesota, when a white Ford F150 bearing Minnesota license plate number MGS304 turned the corner near where your complainant was. Your complainant made eye contact with the driver, who appeared started to see your complainant and/or his squad.
Your complainant noticed that the vehicle’s exhaust system was excessively loud and green 2025 registration tabs were displayed. The vehicle made what appeared to be a quick right‐hand turn onto northbound Balsam Lane, which loops around the neighborhood. A records check revealed that the vehicle’s registration expired in October of 2024. This check also revealed that the registered owner’s driving privileges were revoked. The vehicle made its loop around the neighborhood and when the driver saw your complainant, he started to make a second loop.
Your complainant conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and made contact with its driver, who was identified as GREGORY JANOS KATONA, [DOB REDACTED], the defendant herein. The defendant admitted that he did not have a valid driver’s license and was trying to avoid your complainant. Through his investigation, your complainant found that the registration tabs displayed on the vehicle belonged to a Lincoln Navigator. The defendant claimed to have no knowledge of the tab situation. The vehicle is not registered to the defendant.
State records indicate that the defendant's driving privileges were cancelled on August 29, 2008, because he was found to be inimical to public safety pursuant to Minn. Stat. Section 171.04, Subd. 1(10), and as of September 29, 2025, had not been reinstated.
