On 3/4/2026 at about 1833 hours, St. Paul Police responded to the 1500 block of East Shore Drive in St. Paul, Ramsey County for a two-vehicle head-on collision. Upon arrival, police found the vehicles; a 2016 Ford F150 (MN/SSM-114) and a 2020 Toyota Corolla (MN/EXD-955). Both vehicles has sustained severe frontend damage and their air bags had deployed. The male driver of the F150, LG was standing outside the truck with his infant child. Neither appeared to be injured. LG’s wife, MG, was still in the F150. MG was unable to move and was groaning from pain on the left side of her leg and left hip.
MG was removed from the vehicle and transported to Regions Hospital. The driver, and sole occupant, of the 2020 Toyota Corolla (MN/EXD-955) was identified as Day Wah KU ([DOB REDACTED]). KU was instructed to exit his vehicle. An officer saw that KU's eyes were watery, his speech was slurred, his balance was poor, and there was an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from him when he spoke. When asked how much alcohol he had consumed, KU said "I did something wrong." When pressed, KU admitted that he had been drinking alcohol but said he only had "a little bit." Police spoke to a witness, YM; an off-duty police officer from a different agency.
YM said he was behind the F150 southbound on East Shore Dr. He saw KU’s Corolla driving northbound and taking the curve too fast. KU crossed the center line and collided head on with the F150. YM also said that he could smell alcohol coming from KU’s vehicle. During an inventory search of KU’s vehicle, police found a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm handgun, a magazine with ammunition, and 18 loose rounds of 9mm and 22LR ammunition. KU had a valid permit to carry. Standard field sobriety tests (SFST) were conducted.
KU failed each and showed clear signs of alcohol impairment. After completing the SFSTs, KU agreed to provide a preliminary breath test (PBT) sample, but then conspicuously failed to blow into the PBT device. KU was arrested and transported to Regions Hospital. Pursuant to a search warrant, police obtained a sample of KU’s blood. Police then read KU the Firearms Advisory. KU admitted that he had a firearm in his vehicle and agreed to provide a breath sample. The sample was accepted by the DMT machine and showed a reported value of.13. As of 3/6/26, MG is still hospitalized at Regions.
She suffered a broken hip and is currently undergoing surgery to address her injuries.
