On 05/19/2026 at about 2244 hours, Roseville Police were dispatched to a room at the Motel 6 (2300 Cleveland) in Roseville, Ramsey County. The called reported hearing a possible assault. As officers arrived on scene, they saw a tan Suburban driving toward the parking lot exit. The driver, later identified as Anthony MACKEY [DOB REDACTED], hastily pulled into a parking spot and then fled the scene on foot while police were in the motel office. Police went to the motel room. A black male, AMJ, answered the door.
AMJ had a deep fresh laceration above his eye and appeared disheveled. Police saw copious amounts of blood droplets on the floor and the bed sheets. AMJ said that his father, MACKEY, was drunk, got angry about urine on the toilet seat, and yelled at him to him to clean it up. An argument ensued and then MACKEY punched AMJ in the head about 5 times. MACKEY grabbed him by his sweatshirt collar and slammed him against the wall. MACKEY then held him up by the collar, causing him to be on his tippy toes, pinned him against the wall, and threw him on the bed.
AMJ said MACKEY continued throwing him back and forth from the bed to the ground using the collar of his sweatshirt, which restricted AMJ’s breathing. AMJ said he told MACKEY that he could not breathe, but MACKEY kept going. AMJ estimated that altercation lasted about 10-20 minutes before MACKEY stopped and left the room. AMJ provided a description of MACKEY, which matched that of the individual police had seen driving the Suburban. AMJ also told police that his mother had been on the phone during the altercation and was trying to calm the situation down but MACKEY continued to assault him.
A perimeter was established and a K9 unit was deployed to search of MACKEY. An officer eventually spotted MACKEY who was taken into custody in the Everyday Church parking lot on Cleveland Ave N. In a post-Miranda statement, MACKEY said he discovered AMJ using narcotics in the motel room and urine on the toilet. When he told AMJ to clean up the bathroom an argument ensued. He said AMJ tried to punch him but missed. MACKEY said he then grabbed AMJ by the collar, threw him to the bed, and punched him about 5-8 times.
He denied choking AMJ him and said AMJ attacked him first. Police spoke to AMJ’s mother, CG, by telephone. CG said that AMJ had been staying in the motel with MACKEY and, at about 2200 hours, AMJ called her and said MACKEY was throwing his belongings out of the room. She said she heard both parties yelling. She heard AMJ yelling things like “Stop putting your hands on me”, “Stop hitting me,” and “He hit me in my face.” She said it sounded like MACKEY was “throwing [AMJ] around the room” and “attacking him.
