Complainant is Maple Grove Police Department Detective Dominic Wareham. Complainant states that on August 28, 2024, officers responded to a residence in the city of Maple Grove, Hennepin County, Minnesota, regarding a theft. The reporting party, I. B., stated that her son, TIMOTHY JOHN BURNS [DOB REDACTED], was at her house talking about going into treatment. During their conversation, BURNS grabbed I. B.'s purse off the table and ran out of the door with it. BURNS got in his car and drove away. I. B., who was 86 years old at the time, attempted to chase BURNS but was unable to catch him.
I. B. Stated she had approximately $1,000 in cash in her purse as well as a credit card. I. B. Stated BURNS will likely go to Minneapolis to buy drugs and then to Osseo Cemetary to visit his father's burial site. Officers put out a KOPS alert and on August 29, 2024, officers in New Hope had located and detained BURNS. When officers arrived on scene to transfer him to Maple Grove custody, they found I. B.'s purse with BURNS. BURNS asked officers if he could get his wallet from the vehicle prior to being transported.
In the process of searching a clothes basket for BURNS's wallet, officers located a billfold which also belonged to I. B. There was no cash located in either the purse or billfold.
