He described being held at bay and claimed that she was between him and where his phone was, otherwise, he would have just called for help. Defendant then said "I got her at bay, you know what I mean? She can't go through the front entrance; she got my thirty dollars in the book." Defendant stated that he tried to lunge at her, but before he lunged at her he dropped the knives he was holding. Defendant claimed that Victim was strong and being very combative and that during this tussle, they somehow ended up on the ground.
Defendant then said, "in some kind of way, she done got the gun." He said that he could feel the hardness of the gun and the gun was bending and she was lifting him up with her legs and the "gun went off." Defendant said Victim wasn't moving after the shot went off and that he set the gun on the table. Defendant also stated that he took his $30 back from Victim [NAME REDACTED] called 911. 2 27-CR-25-28272 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 11/7/2025 Defendant described that it was a heavy gun, and it had a sock or something over the gun.
He initially said that there was a hole in the sock, and he could see the silver of the gun but later admitted that the gun was his.45 caliber gun which he had owned for 15 years. Defendant claimed that when he and Victim initially got to the apartment, he didn't know where the gun was as he normally keeps the gun in the oven. Defendant denied taking the gun out when the female pulled the knife. Defendant claimed that the female must've found the gun somewhere or come across it somehow. Defendant then admitted that Victim [NAME REDACTED] had to go, and he was trying to push Victim away from his apartment door to keep her in his apartment.
He said that it wasn't until he stepped in front of her to prevent her from leaving that she pulled the knife out and that is when he grabbed the long knife to scare her.
