On or about November 5, 2025, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department were dispatched regarding a shooting that had occurred at 26XX West Broadway Av #215, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, State of Minnesota. Officers were advised that a male, later identified as RAYMOND LEWIS JONES ([DOB redacted]), Defendant herein, had shot a female who was later identified as D. M. A. J. ([DOB redacted]), Victim herein, in his apartment after she had allegedly pulled a knife on him. Upon arrival, officers observed that the apartment was cluttered and there was a patch for only one person to walk at a time from the front door towards the living room/ bedroom area, which was straight ahead from the apartment door.
Officers saw Victim lying down on the ground, wedged between a table and a couch. Victim was not moving and didn't look to be breathing. Officers observed what appeared to be a folding pocketknife in her right hand, with the tip pointed up. Officers observed two other knives on a chair inside the apartment. Victim appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to her chest/abdomen and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel. Officers seized the knives, as well as a black sock with the muzzle of a silver handgun protruding out of the sock from inside the apartment.
Defendant, in a post-Miranda interview stated that he just met Victim earlier that day in the area of East Franklin Ave near 11th or 10th Ave S. And said he did not know her name. He said that he saw her walking and she "seemed like good people" and didn't look like she was high. Defendant picked Victim up and he admitted that he has picked up prostitutes in this area before. Defendant said he brought her back to his apartment and offered Victim some marijuana, which he smoked. Defendant referred to an arrangement he made with Victim for the "situation" referring to sex for money.
Defendant claimed that, although he did not like condoms, Victim put a condom on him. Defendant then told Victim it was too tight, that she had a "heavy hand" and that this "wasn't working." Defendant said that Victim then stood up and walked over and put her jacket on. Defendant said that he jumped up and tried to keep Victim from going out the door because she was trying to make fast moves to get out of the apartment. He asked her what she was doing and said, "she just flipped the whole script”, and she was ready to leave really fast.
Defendant said that he looked down at the table in the apartment and realized the $30.00 cash he had placed on the table wasn't there anymore. He said the female was putting the cash in the pages of her book and he told her "that ain't going on." Defendant claimed that the Victim then pulled a knife, which he had seen earlier on Victim, and that he wasn't able to move her away from the door. Defendant said that Victim started "getting loud" and he then grabbed two of his own knives. Defendant said he told Victim "put my money back down there" that the female "held her stance." Defendant stated that he had "three knives" at one point and he could have attacked her.
