On February 17, 2026, the defendant, MAURICE ANGELO SMITH aka MAURICE ANGELO MCCLINTON SMITH [DOB REDACTED], was an inmate at the Ramsey County Adult Detention Cener at [ADDRESS REDACTED], St. Paul, Ramsey County. The defendant attacked another inmate, MJF [DOB REDACTED]. The defendant put MJF in a chokehold from behind. Correctional officers had to spray the defendant with chemical agent to get the defendant to stop attacking MJF. When being taken to a cell the defendant said, “I just snapped, bro.” Smith said he heard from other inmates that MJF had raped a 12- year-old girl.
MJF had red marks on his neck and a small cut on the left side of his face. MJF said he was just watching TV when the defendant attacked him. MJF said he was scared for his life. The defendant has 2 prior qualified domestic violence-related offense convictions within the past 3 years: On February 13, 2026, the defendant was sentenced on a murder in the second degree in Ramsey County District Court file ••-CR-••-••••. On September 4, 2025, the defendant was sentenced on a misdemeanor assault in the fifth degree in Anoka County District Court file ••-CR-••-••••. The defendant repeatedly punched another inmate at the Anoka Metro Regional Treatment Center.
The defendant is currently in the Minnesota Department of Corrections at St. Cloud.
