On January 11, 2025, Brooklyn Center Police Officers responded to a theft report at TJ Maxx, 1300 Shingle Creek Crossing, Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County. The reporting party, a TJ Maxx employee, stated that a male had concealed merchandise and left the store without paying for it. The employee stated that the male had stolen from the store numerous times over the past several months. The male was later identified as MICHAEL JEROME JAMES, Defendant herein. Officers arrived at the store where the Defendant had fled onto an oncoming bus.
Officers boarded the bus and removed him. The TJ Maxx employee arrived on scene and identified the Defendant as the person who had been stealing from TJ Maxx. Officers reviewed the reports and surveillance from each reported incident and confirmed the Defendant to be the person stealing in each incident. The following incidents were reviewed: August 2, 2025, where $142.91 in merchandise was stolen. August 24, 2025, where $64.95 in merchandise was stolen. September 15, 2025, where $272.83 in merchandise was stolen.
September 16, 2025, where $203.88 in merchandise was stolen. September 27, 2025, where $104.94 in merchandise was stolen. October 9, 2025, where $136.90 in merchandise was stolen. January 10, 2026, where $103.95 in merchandise was stolen. A total of $1,030.36. The Defendant was also in the store stealing items outside of the most recent 6 month window to charge an aggregate theft. The Defendant is currently in custody.
