On 12/20/2025 at about 2014 hours, St. Paul Police were dispatched to [ADDRESS REDACTED] in St. Paul, Ramsey County for a welfare check. The caller, EDG, said he received text messages from a friend, AKF, which said that AKF’s boyfriend, later identified as Daniel Austin Choi MOFFETT, ([DOB REDACTED]), had threatened to shoot AKF and shoot himself. While enroute, police spoke to AKF by telephone. She confirmed the information provided by EDG but said she could not talk freely because MOFFETT was with her.
Answering primarily with “yes or no,” AKF advised that MOFFETT had a gun, had pointed a gun at her, and that she was trying to leave with a friend but did not feel safe doing so. AKF and her friend, ASW, eventually left the apartment and met with police outside. AKF said that she and MOFFETT had been in an intimate relationship for about 3 weeks, both had a history of alcohol and cocaine abuse, and both had relapsed. She said MOFFET was distraught about relapsing, was hopeless, and said there was "no point in living anymore". AKF said MOFFETT pulled out a black handgun with a green laser on it but eventually set it down.
AKF grabbed the gun and ran into the bathroom to "hide." MOFFETT came into the bathroom, grabbed the gun from her and pointed it at her chest for about 2-3 seconds. AKF saw the green laser dot on her chest. AKF said she grabbed the gun from MOFFETT, who was very drunk, and held it behind her back. MOFFETT then dropped to the ground and begged her to shoot him in the head. At that point, AKF began recording MOFFET with her phone and texted EDG for help. Police spoke to EDG who said that he had been friends with AKF for a couple of years.
He said MOFFETT has struggled with alcohol abuse and severe depression. EDG said MOFFETT is known to have 4 handguns and that a month ago, MOFFETT held a gun to his head and threatened to shoot himself. EDG said that about two days ago, MOFFETT threatened to shoot a male whom he heard had sexually assaulted AKF. EDG said MOFFET “is going to either kill himself or others". EDG said that tonight he received a text from AKF and showed it to police. It said *"Dan just put. A gun to me then gave me it back and begged me to shoot him in hr [sic] head." AKF then sent EDG a video of MOFFETT on the ground begging her to shoot him, which EDG showed to police.
Police spoke to ASW who said she is friends with MOFFETT and knows AKF. ASW said she did see MOFFETT retrieve "a black handgun" but it was because MOFFETT believed someone was going to hurt AKF and he wanted to protect her. AKW said MOFFETT did not threaten or point the handgun at anyone while she was there and she was surprised police were waiting outside. When police approached the address, they found MOFFETT standing outside smoking a cigarette. His speech was slurred and he was wobbly. He was taken into custody.
