On April 2, 2026, at approximately 1606 hours, Oakdale Police Department Officer Barr was dispatched to the Fleet Farm store located at [ADDRESS REDACTED] North, in Oakdale, Washington County, Minnesota for a report of a theft. The complainant, an employee at the store, called to report that a male inside the store had used a pocket knife to cut ratchet straps from their packaging and then conceal the ratchet straps under a bag in a shopping cart. The complainant also said that the male was concealing fishing lures that he had picked up in the store.
The complainant gave a description of the male, including what he was wearing. Upon his arrival at the store, Officer Barr observed the male exit the store with a shopping car and walk toward the parking lot. Officer Barr detained the male and conducted a search incident to arrest. The male was identified as SHAWN MICHAEL OBERG [DOB REDACTED]. During the search, Officer Barr located several unopened fishing lures and other items from the store in his jacket and pants pocket. He also located a black folding knife in Oberg's front pants pocket.
A pair of ratchet straps were found in the bottom of the shopping car that Oberg was pushing out. Oberg was transported to the Washington County jail and read a Miranda warning. Oberg admitted that he had used a pocket knife to cut open the packaging for the ratchet straps, conceal the ratchet straps and discard the packaging. Oberg said he had never stolen before. The complainant later confirmed with officers that they did not observe Oberg paying for the items before leaving the store. The total cost of the items that were taken from Fleet Farm totaled $110.01.
