On May 2, 2026, at approximately 7:05 P.M., police responded to a call of shots fired at the intersection of Sims Avenue and Greenbrier Street, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. While on scene, police heard two volleys of shots fired to the west of their location and multiple calls came in about shots being fired. Police drove to the area of Payne and York Avenues. Responding officers saw several people running southbound on Payne Avenue from Sims Avenue. Police chased one of the males, later identified as LADARRIUS LAVON GRANDBERRY aka LARARRIUS LAVON GRANBERRY – [DOB REDACTED], and detained him.
Police observed a magazine in the left pocket of his zip-up sweatshirt and a handgun near his feet. GRANDBERRY kicked the handgun towards the fence. The firearm did not contain a serial number. Police observed that the handgun had a malfunction where the spent casing was backwards in the chamber. Police located the loaded magazine inside a cut hole in the pocket of GRANDBERRY’s zip-up sweatshirt. In addition, police located suspected narcotics in GRANDBERRY’s pants pocket. Several other individuals identified as having been involved in the shooting incident were located and detained inside the East Market Grocery and Tobacco Shop.
The store owner, DA, told police where the individuals walked in the store. An officer searched the shelves in the identified area and located disorganized items on a shelf. The officer moved the items and located a Glock 17 handgun with an extended magazine. A review of video from the store revealed that one of the detained males, TYLER LASHUN PAYNE – [DOB REDACTED], removed the handgun from his waistband and placed it on the shelf where the officer recovered it. Following a Miranda advisory, GRANDBERRY told police that his younger brother, DM, was having ongoing issues with other juveniles at school.
GRANDBERRY stated that earlier that day, a group of 20 of them showed up at their house to try to fight DM, and his mother called him to help. Later, GRANDBERRY said that he and some friends as well as DM went to Wilder Recreation Center to hang out. GRANDBERRY reported that he grabbed a gun from his house for protection due to the ongoing issues his brother was facing. Shortly after arriving at the rec center park, GRANDBERRY said that a group of approximately eight people began verbally challenging them from across the park.
GRANDBERRY stated that most of the people in the group were wearing masks concealing their faces, and some of them had bags on their chest and insinuated that they had guns. GRANDBERRY said he and PAYNE turned to walk through the alley then heard several gunshots. GRANDBERRY stated that he assumed it was the group from the park shooting at them, although he did not see who was shooting or where the shots were coming from, and he and PAYNE shot back towards the entrance of the alley. GRANDBERRY reported that he shot one time then his gun malfunctioned.
