On August 15, 2025, Macy’s loss prevention at 1595 Highway 36 West, Roseville, Ramsey County began an investigation into money discrepancies. The investigation revealed that an employee, SHELLY VIRGINIA MAYO [DOB REDACTED], had been stealing cash that the store kept on hand to replenish cash register totals. Between August 15, 2025 and September 18, 2025, the store’s internal investigation showed a shortage of $8180, but the investigation failed to reveal where in the process Mayo was stealing the cash.
On September 18, 2025, loss prevention employees interviewed Mayo about the missing money. Mayo eventually admitted she stole the money, but she did not know the total amount she had stolen. Mayo said she took extra cash from the vault when taking bags of money intended to replenish the registers. Mayo removed the extra cash from the bags when she was in a private area. Mayo didn’t think the amount was as large as the amount quoted by Macy’s, but she signed a promissory note acknowledging theft in the amount of $8180. Mayo said she had been stealing cash in this manner for about 8 weeks.
A final audit conducted on September 18, 2025 showed the total amount missing was $8260.
