One pair of shoes was purchased correctly with cash being placed in the register for the transaction. A second pair of shoes was placed in front of the Defendant, the unknown person hands the Defendant cash, and the Defendant placed cash into his pocket without processing the transaction at the register. The Defendant placed the shoes in a JD Sports store bag, and the person left the store without a receipt causing a loss of $220. On March 16, 2026, the Defendant was working at the Southdale Mall JD Sports location.
At 1:20 P.M., the Defendant appeared to be approached by an unknown person from a prior theft at the Ridgedale Mall Finish Line location. The unknown person placed merchandise on the store counter and continued shopping for shoes. At 1:37 P.M., the Defendant processes a low dollar item for the person, and the person 2 27-CR-26-9623 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 4/16/2026 taps their phone for payment. The Defendant then removes the security sensors and uses his phone's calculator. The Defendant bags up unpaid for merchandise with a loss of $440. The unknown person then appears to send the Defendant money through a money transfer application.
The unknown person then exits the store with the merchandise. At 4:49 P.M., the Defendant cancelled a transaction, removed sensor tags from merchandise, then walked to the men's section with the merchandise. The Defendant then handed the unknown person the merchandise who concealed it into the store bag from the 1:37 P.M. Transaction. The Defendant then opened his wallet, handed the unknown person change, and the unknown person handed the Defendant $100. The loss for this interaction to JD Sports is $110. The total loss for the day is $550. The total loss to both locations is $3,278.00. The Defendant met with the reporting parties on March 19, 2026, regarding the thefts.
The Defendant signed a Voluntary Statement where he stated that he gave away merchandise and received cash which he pocketed. The Defendant is currently out of custody.
