On or about June 2, 2026, at approximately 6:10 P.M., officers responded to a call from a concerned citizen on the 27000 block of Blue Ridge Lane in Shorewood, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The concerned citizen reported seeing a vehicle near the Lotus Lake Boat Launch, and the driver of the vehicle was clearly intoxicated. The concerned citizen reported the vehicle as a gray Toyota Tundra driven by a white male with a knee bandage and cargo shorts. Officers drove to the area and observed a vehicle matching the concerned citizen’s description on Smithtown Road at approximately 6:20 P.M. Officers saw the vehicle was pulling an empty boat trailer.
The vehicle traveled southbound on Smithtown Road then turned left on Lake Virginia Drive. Officers saw the vehicle turn left again onto Blue Ridge Lane without using any signal. Officers activated their emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop. Officers identified the driver as ROBERT BRUCE JANKE (“Defendant” herein). Defendant exited the vehicle, and officers immediately noticed Defendant was unsteady on his feet. Officers observed Defendant wearing a knee bandage. Officers asked Defendant if he had been out on the lake, and he denied that he was.
Officers saw Defendant’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was slurred. Officers detected an odor of alcohol coming from Defendant as they approached him. Defendant told officers that he was coming from work, and he hauls boats as a job. Officers told Defendant they received a call reporting Defendant was driving while impaired, and Defendant responded, “I love you guys. I was not. My mom Sergeant at Chaska Police Department.” Officers asked Defendant if he had consumed any alcohol, and he denied.
Defendant said his last alcoholic drink was at approximately 10 P.M. The night before. Officers asked Defendant if he had any speech difficulties, and he said, “Dilectic… not.” Defendant then told officers that he had knee surgery and he was taking Oxycontin as prescribed. Defendant agreed to perform the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test. Defendant moved his head during this test, making it difficult to see any clues of impairment. Officers asked Defendant to recite the alphabet from G to Q, and Defendant said, “I couldn’t do that…ADT. I can say ADTs.” Defendant recited the alphabet from A to V and then said “WRX.” Officers asked Defendant to count backwards from 88 to 64, and Defendant asked to use his phone to assist him.
Officers placed Defendant under arrest. Officers recovered an empty Fireball shooter from Defendant’s left pocket. Officers impounded Defendant’s vehicle. In searching the vehicle, officers recovered an open case of beer, two empty beer cans, and an empty Fireball shooter from the center console. Officers also recovered an empty can from under the driver’s seat and more empty cans in a cooler behind the front passenger seat. Officers transported Defendant to the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department, where they read the Minnesota Breath Test Advisory.
