On February 4, 2025, at approximately 5:54 A.M., police responded to Union Depot, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, on a report of an assault. Police made contact with SLP, who had blood on his face and hands with swelling to the bridge of his nose. SLP said he was assaulted when he was trying to protect the operator by getting them off the train. SLP had difficulty answering questions because he was hearing impaired and his hearing devices were broken during the assault. SLP was transported to Regions Hospital.
On November 19, 2025, the investigator reviewed surveillance footage, which showed SLP being confronted by three males: PRESTON NORWOOD JR – [DOB REDACTED], DION DARVELL LEWIS – [DOB REDACTED], and JJP. LEWIS told SLP, “Get his ass off. Oh he left you by yourself? Left you in a lion’s den with two hungry lions.” NORWOOD told SLP, “Empty your pockets. Empty your pockets.” SLP responded, “Stay back. Stay back. I got nothing today.” SLP went to the back row and sat down. NORWOOD and LEWIS walked up to him.
SLP extended his arm to try to keep NORWOOD away, but NORWOOD shoved his hand away and kept approaching SLP. NORWOOD clenched his fist and stood in front of SLP blocking any avenue of escape. SLP kicked at NORWOOD to get him back. LEWIS punched SLP in the face. SLP pleaded with NORWOOD and LEWIS to stay back. NORWOOD grabbed SLP’s leg and pulled him out of the chair and onto the floor. While on the floor, SLP tried to use his feet to keep NORWOOD and LEWIS back and continued pleading for them to stop.
NORWOOD kicked SLP in the face. LEWIS grabbed SLP’s roller bag and took it. NORWOOD kicked SLP in the face again. SLP appeared to be knocked out from the kick as he went limp and did not say anything for approximately eight seconds. NORWOOD called SLP a derogatory name then felt his pants pocket and punched SLP in the face. SLP started to come to and groan. NORWOOD kicked SLP in the face two additional times. LEWIS took SLP’s roller bag and walked up the train with it. NORWOOD told SLP, “I’ll kill you b****.
