On November 25, 2025, at 9:00 P.M. Wright County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a report of a male with a knife on Golf Course Road in Monticello, Wright County, Minnesota. Deputy Skweres, Deputy Bauman and Deputy Phillips responded and located the male on Golf Course Road near Fairway Drive. The male, subsequently identified as Dwayne Evan Trunnell, [DOB REDACTED], defendant herein, was holding a knife in his hand walking towards the deputies. Deputies repeatedly announced commands to the defendant in a loud and clear voice to drop the weapon.
The defendant did not comply with the commands. The defendant continued advancing towards deputies with the knife in his hand. Deputies announced that they were going to use a Taser on the defendant. The defendant briefly turned around and took a few steps away from the deputies. The defendant then turned and ran towards deputies with the knife in his hand. The deputies loudly commanded the defendant to drop the knife saying they did not want to shoot the defendant. The defendant continued running towards deputies with the knife in his hand.
The defendant got within a close distance of deputies. Deputy Phillips deployed his Taser on the defendant. Deputy Skweres used his handgun to shoot the defendant as he was running at deputies with the knife in his hand. The defendant fell to the ground but got up and charged deputies with the knife in his hand. Deputy Skweres used his handgun to shoot the defendant. The defendant fell to the ground but got up and again charged deputies with the knife in his hand. Deputy Skweres used his handgun to shoot the defendant.
The defendant fell to the ground and finally relinquished the knife he had been holding. Throughout the encounter, deputies shouted commands to the defendant to drop the knife. Deputies provided medical care for the defendant until the arrival of paramedics.
