[DOB REDACTED], defendant herein, was an inmate at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility in the City of St. Cloud, County of Sherburne, State of Minnesota. The defendant was in a shared cell number 703 with another inmate, JC. Correctional officers were alerted to an incident that was occurring in the cell by other inmates calling for correctional officers to respond to the cell. When correctional officers arrived at cell 703 they observed JC laying on the floor by the cell door and large amounts of blood in the cell.
JC was not immediately responsive to correctional officers attempts to communicate. JC was taken for medical attention by facility medical staff and subsequently was taken by ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital emergency room. JC was diagnosed as having sustained bilateral orbital floor fractures, specifically a closed fracture of the right orbital bone and closed fracture of the left orbital bone, along with double vision and headaches. JC also sustained multiple lacerations to his head that required staples and sutures to close.
A review of the surveillance video of the incident shows the defendant sitting on the top bunk of cell 703 and JC sitting on a chair with his back to the defendant. The defendant is seen jumping down from the bunk and knocking JC onto his back with his head against the cell bars. The defendant is seen repeatedly stomping on JC's face and upper torso with his foot as JC's head is against the cell bars. Photos taken of JC show significant bruising on his face, with both eyes blackened and eyes swollen shut.
