On January 30, at approximately 9:52 P.M., Maplewood Police were dispatched to Emerald Inn Hotel, [address omitted] D, Maplewood, County of Ramsey, on a robbery call. Officers arrived and found FG in room #343 of the hotel. FG told officers a female gave him a ride to the hotel a few nights prior. FG said a few weeks prior, he helped Rico-an acquaintance-(identified in investigation as JULIAN SEBASTIAN CASTRO, [DOB redacted]- move some stuff. He was not able to take all of CASTRO’s (referred to as Rico by FG) items to him because of the snowstorm.
CASTRO threatened him and told him he would kick his ass. On January 30th, he was seated in his friend’s Chevrolet Malibu. At approximately 9:42 P.M., CASTRO approached him on the driver’s side of the vehicle, acting crazy, and directed him to roll down the window, which he did. CASTRO punched him in the face with his fist and on the side of his head. FG exited the vehicle and asked CASTRO what he was doing. CASTRO demanded money for his items not being delivered to him. CASTRO asked him how much money he had on him, and he replied only a few bucks.
CASTRO demanded more money, and said if he didn’t give it to him, he would f*** him up. FG told CASTRO he might have more money in his hotel room, as a stall tactic. CASTRO and another Suspect #2 followed him into the hotel and to the third floor. CASTRO demanded he empty his pockets. Suspect #2 stood about two feet away, held a switch blade down at his side-with the blade open. CASTRO and the second suspect took his wallet (with identification, credit cards, a vehicle title, and his son’s school information), the keys to his vehicle, his cellphone, approximately $140 in US currency, and a gray box with scrap jewelry items.
FG gave the suspects his items because he believed he would be stabbed or jumped if he did not. He told CASTRO and Suspect #2 that was all the money he had. CASTRO and Suspect #2 said they were going back down to his vehicle, and walked down the stairs. FG also said he was missing a purple laptop bag with Beats headphones, a black Puma backpack, and a blue Patagonia backpack. CASTRO was taken to Regions Hospital. CASTRO had the following items in his possession-$110, blue jewelry box with a silver heart necklace, silver jewelry box with assorted jewelry pieces, key ring with a silver key.
The suspect vehicle-a black GMC Yukon, was observed traveling west on County Road D E, approaching White Bear Avenue. Officers initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from officers in excess of 100 miles per hour. Squad vehicles pinned the vehicle against a brick barrier. Four occupants were removed from the vehicle- CASTRO (driver); Jorge Mauricio Castillo, [DOB redacted]; Alma Rosa Linda Torres, [DOB redacted]; and Kellie Shelene Nelson, [DOB redacted]. CASTRO said, “That’s my f****** b**** ass brother and I f****** socked his stupid ass in the mouth cuz he stole a thousand dollars from me.” After a Miranda advisory, CASTRO spoke to an officer.
