On December 15, 2025, Minneapolis Police officers responded to a domestic call at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. N., Minneapolis, Hennepin County. Upon arrival, they met with an adult female, hereinafter "Victim." She said her ex-husband was with her daughter, CARMELITA MAE SMITH, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter "Defendant," at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. N, Hennepin County, on December 14, 2025. He called Victim to come over to help him with her because she was getting angry with him. Victim arrived at Defendant's house around 4:00 P.M. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was yelling using different voices and arguing with her ex-husband.
She tried to intervene, and Defendant then grabbed both of her hands and pushed her against the door. Defendant weighs approximately 400 pounds, so she was starting to have difficulty breathing. Defendant grabbed the back of Victim's hair and started whipping her around the living room. Victim [NAME REDACTED], and Defendant got on top of her and pressed all her weight on top of Victim's stomach with her fists. Defendant then pulled Victim's jacket over her mouth and tried to suffocate her with it.
She said she was forced into the door jamb by Defendant's body during this time, and her breath was impeded. She said she lost consciousness two times. Defendant would release the pressure from her jacket at times and then tighten it again. She could feel her lungs were compressed from the downward pressure being applied to her torso by Defendant, and she was not able to get full breaths during this time. She pretended that she passed out and went limp. During this time, she was able to use her phone and call her ex-husband who had left the house.
He was able to open the doorway and rescue her. She left and got medical attention at the hospital. Officers put out a KOPS alert for Defendant, and she was apprehended on December 17, 2025 at Target on Nicollet Mall. She was placed under arrest and brought to the Hennepin County Jail where she remains in custody.
