On May 25, 2026, at approximately 12:42 A.M., law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence in Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County, Minnesota, on a report of a burglary. Upon arrival, officers made contact with J. A. Who is the owner of this residence. She reported while she was not home, her boyfriend’s nephew, DEVIN LAVELLE SAGATAW [DOB REDACTED], entered her residence without consent. This was captured on surveillance video. The video reveals SAGATAW approach the door on May 24, 2026, at 12:44 A.M. He knocks on the door, but no one answers.
He then removes the screen to the window to the side of the door, slides open the window, reaches inside, and turns open the door handle to gain entry into the residence. While in the residence, a loud boom can be heard, believed to be a single gunshot. At 12:48 A.M., SAGATAW exits the residence, slamming the front door before entering the passenger side of a dark in color sedan. An officer also spoke to J. A.’s mother who lives in the same townhome complex. She reported that after SAGATAW left her residence, he came to her residence.
While there, he showed her a firearm on his person. He then got into a dark in color sedan and left. J. A. Returned to her residence a short time before she called police. She had been working a long shift and had been away from her residence. Upon arrival, she observed signs of unlawful entry and sought her neighbor for help. While inside her residence, she observed a bullet hole in the ceiling of the dining room that was not previously there. An officer entered the residence and observed a bullet hole in the dining room ceiling.
A bullet traveled through the ceiling into the second-floor bathroom and then made entrance into the second-floor bathroom ceiling. SAGATAW has a prior juvenile adjudication for Aggravated Robbery in the 1st Degree in violation of Minn. Stat. § 609.245 from February 18, 2010 (court file ••-CR-••-••••).
