On April 18, 2026, at approximately 4:01 A.M., police were dispatched to a domestic assault near Dewey Street and Laurel Avenue in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. Dispatch comments stated that the caller’s boyfriend put his hands on her earlier and also assaulted another individual. The caller, AD, refused to provide the address of the apartment where the incident occurred because she did not want to get kicked out of her apartment. AD then told the dispatcher that she wanted to forget it, that her father was coming to pick her up, and hung up.
AD did not respond to call back attempts then called dispatch back and asked to cancel the call. The dispatcher advised AD that the call could not be cancelled, and AD responded that she was safe and would let officers know that she was okay. Upon arrival, police noted that AD had visible injuries on her face, jaw, and neck, and that she was not properly dressed to be outside. AD smelled strongly of a consumed alcoholic beverage and told police she had been drinking that night. Initially, AD was extremely reluctant to speak with police and said repeatedly that she did not want her boyfriend to get arrested.
AD told police that she was fine and did not need to make a report. Eventually, AD stated that she was drinking that night with her boyfriend, later fully identified as BERNARD ALMON MCMANUS – [DOB REDACTED], when AD made a comment about not liking MCMANUS’s mother because she was abusive towards him. That made MCMANUS upset. MCMANUS told AD that she did not know what abuse was then “lost his s***” and assaulted her. AD reported being strangled multiple times, had her face bit by MCMANUS, and had her head slammed repeatedly into the wall and floor.
AD described an incident in the bathroom where MCMANUS forced her into the bathtub then got on top of her and strangled her. AD estimated that the strangulation lasted 90 seconds, although stated that MCMANUS briefly let go to allow AD a gasp of air. AD reported that her vision went back, she lost consciousness, and she urinated on herself during that strangulation. AD said that she strangled four times and kept telling MCMANUS, “Stop. You’re going to accidentally kill me.” AD reported that she went outside to get away from MCMANUS and screamed for help.
AD stated that MCMANUS threw her down and ground her face into the grass. The officer noted leaves in AD’s hair. AD reported that MCMANUS repeatedly forced his fingers into her mouth, which caused her to vomit. AD said there was blood in her vomit. AD reported that the assault stopped when a neighbor came outside. MCMANUS took her keys and purse and went back inside. AD was taken inside by the neighbors. AD stated that she and MCMANUS lived together for a year and a half and just moved from Minneapolis.
AD acknowledged that MCMANUS previously assaulted her but said she never called the police before. When asked about the last time MCMANUS assaulted her, AD stated that it was a week earlier and showed the officer a bump on the top of her head that she said was caused by MCMANUS slamming her head into a concrete floor. The officer noted that AD had a prominent bite mark on her lower right jawline as well as several contusions and red marks on her neck consistent with a front choke. While being examined at Regions, the officer noted that AD complained of pain on her back and left collarbone, made several comments about her throat hurting, and had difficulty swallowing a pill.
