On April 17, 2026, at about 3:00pm, Hopkins Police responded to the area of Feltl Court and Smetana Road in Hopkins, Hennepin County, Minnesota, for a reported shooting. The caller said someone was shot in the head. When police arrived at the location, they observed a gray 2025 Kia sedan with Minnesota License Plate [PLATE REDACTED] parked on the east side of Feltl Court with the driver side and passenger side doors open. Two black males were seen sitting in the grass away from the Kia. When officers approached, the two seemed to be crying and one of them said "He's dead". An officer near the Kia confirmed the front passenger in the Kia, later identified as Passenger N. S. A., had a gunshot wound to the head.
The males in the grass were identified as Co-Suspect S. A.M. [DOB REDACTED] and MOHAMED ABSHIR GARAAD ("Defendant", [DOB REDACTED]). Officers investigated the Kia at the scene, and found two Glock style handguns with auto-sear conversion switches in the front passenger area and backseat of the vehicle. After officers arrived, the juvenile brother of Passenger N. S. A., Witness [NAME REDACTED]A., arrived at the scene. Witness [NAME REDACTED]A. Said he had received a message telling him his brother had been shot.
Officers seized Witness [NAME REDACTED]A.'s phone for containing possible evidence. Officers also seized Defendant's phone and Co-Suspect S. A.M.'s phone. As officers continued investigating the scene, two more firearms were located in the woods just west of where the vehicle stopped. Witness [NAME REDACTED]C. Saw the scene before police arrived and described seeing three people running away from the vehicle and around the nearby woods. Witness [NAME REDACTED]C. Said two remained at the scene, but one ran away.
One of the firearms found in the woods also had an auto-sear switch. On April 19, officers completed a phone extraction of Witness [NAME REDACTED]A.'s cellphone. On the phone, officers found a SnapChat video from April 17 at about 2:44pm showing the inside of the gray Kia sedan where the shooting happened. The video showed three males in the vehicle: Co-Suspect S. A.M., Defendant, and Passenger N. S. A. The video shows Defendant in the back seat holding three handguns, including a firearm with a visible switch.
That handgun with the switch was found in the Kia after the shooting. The other two firearms match the firearms found in the woods near the vehicle. Police also reviewed videos extracted from Defendant's phone and found additional video from shortly before the time of the incident of Defendant posing with the handgun with a switch that was recovered from the front passenger seat of the Kia. Defendant is out of custody. During the course of investigation, police found additional cell phone videos showing Defendant with additional firearms that were not recovered after this incident.
