On January 11, 2026, officers were called to the parking lot of a Lunds and Byerly's located in the City of Eden Prairie, County of Hennepin, on report of an individual hitting vehicles with a hockey stick. That individual was subsequently identified as DARRYL KEITH SMOLEROFF [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. Upon arrival officers spoke with victim [NAME REDACTED], who stated that Defendant had approached him while he was in his car in the store parking lot, and hit his car with a hockey stick. P. B. Later provided officers an estimate of $3,497.06 to repair the damage to the car.
Officers located Defendant with the hockey stick a short distance away. Officers attempted to stop Defendant to speak with him, but he was uncooperative and refused to talk with them. Defendant told officers that they were "terrorists" who had kidnapped him from his own home. Officers then told Defendant he was not free to leave and took hold of his left arm. Defendant pushed officers away, ran into the middle of the road, and faced officers with the hockey stick held in an aggressive manner. Officers told Defendant to drop the hockey stick and that he was under arrest.
Defendant replied, "no I'm not" and kept hold of the hockey stick. Officers deployed a taser to bring Defendant into custody. After successful deployment Defendant continued to physically resist officers while on the ground as they arrested him. Defendant was eventually arrested. Defendant is in custody in Hennepin County.
