All of the above locations are in Itasca County. On January 6, 2026, Investigator Bill Saw of the Grand Rapids Police Department was assigned to investigate an allegation that Piner was residing with J. K. L. D. And her four children at the Country Inn and Suites at [ADDRESS REDACTED] 169 in Grand Rapids. The above report also triggered an investigation by Itasca County Child Protection. Investigator Saw was aware that Country Inn and Suites is known for allowing workers to live at the hotel, sometimes operating similar to a halfway house in providing past offenders a second chance, but also operating as a legitimate hotel/business.
Prior to January 6, 2026, the Grand Rapids Police Department and Itasca County Health and Human Services had received unsubstantiated reports that Piner was residing at Country Inn and Suites with J. K. L. D. And her children. On the morning of January 6, 2026, a coordinated response was taken by the Grand Rapids Police Department, Itasca County Health and Human Services/Child Protection Services and the Minnesota Department of Corrections, in which representatives from all agencies proceeded to the Country Inn and Suites simultaneously to make contact with J. K. L. D. And Piner.
When the various representatives arrived, the employee at the front desk reported that Piner had not started his maintenance shift for the day, but had been staying with J. K. L. D. In room 135. Investigator Saw knocked on the door of room 135. The door was answered by one of J. K. L. D.'s children. The room was dark. The child [NAME REDACTED]. A short time later, J. K. L. D. Came to the door, at which time the various representatives identified themselves. J. K. L. D. Then went back into the room, yelling for Piner.
It was evident that J. K. L. D. Had just woken up. She later acknowledged that "they all overslept," which is why the children were not in school. Piner eventually came to the door. He denied living in the hotel room. Piner claimed that J. K. L. D. Had picked him up that morning. The truck driven by J. K. L. D. And Piner was later located behind the hotel frosted over with the hood cold to the touch. J. K. L. D. Later confirmed that Piner had been staying in the room with her and her children for the past "couple weeks." 3 31-CR-26-33 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 1/7/2026 Piner continued to claim that he did not live or stay there.
